Plus de 80 kilomètres carrés ont été ravagés par les flammes et des milliers de personnes priées de partir en raison d'un incendie qui se propage rapidement depuis jeudi dans le nord de la Californie, ont annoncé les autorités.

«Ce sinistre est très dangereux, s'il vous plaît, évacuez les lieux si on vous le demande», a twitté le département californien pour les Forêts et la protection contre les incendies, Cal Fire.

Le feu, dénommé Camp Fire et tardif dans la saison, a d'ores et déjà détruit des dizaines d'habitations de demeures dans le comté de Butte où l'état d'urgence a été décrété. Quelque 15'000 points névralgiques sont menacés.

Alimenté par des vents violents, le sinistre s'est propagé dès l'aube à une très grande vitesse, couvrant la ville de Paradise, 27'000 habitants, d'épaisses fumées et de cendres. Des dizaines de maisons ont été détruites, ainsi qu'un hôpital et une station-service.

Un autre incendie s'est développé dans le sud de la Californie, à quelques kilomètres de l'endroit où un ancien soldat a ouvert le feu, mercredi soir, dans un bar de Thousand Oaks, au nord de Malibu, tuant douze personnes avant de se suicider.

Cet autre sinistre a réduit en fumée une quarantaine de kilomètres carrés, selon les autorités californiennes.
